Unfortunately most of these answers are incorrect. The values you have in your spreadsheet contain VAT at 17.5% already.

You need to work out the original value, not what a 17.5% reduction on the current price would be. These are different things.

For example, your item cost £100 including VAT. The original price ex. VAT is £85.11 (100/1.175). The majority of the answers previously given would result in £82.50 but this is a 17.5% discount, not the VAT exempt price.

So to create an Excel formula place your overall price in cell A1 the formula in cell B1 can be:

= A1/1.175

You will sound more sexy if you say "... I want to subtract the VAT ..." instead of ... I want to minus the VAT ..."

Assuming the figure is in cell A1 the easiest way is =A1*0.825.

this is equivalent to =A1-(A1*0.175)

why not seperate the results in different cells to make it easier for yourself?

b1=a1/100 * 17.5
c1=a1-b1

Does that make it easier for you?
