Remember that the Louisiana Purchase didn't just include Louisiana -- it included about a quarter of the land that is now in the USA -- including all the land just west of the Mississippi River up through Minnesota and west along the Missouri River.

Napoleon wanted to sell the land so he could get funds for his wars. He was willing to sell at a cheap price. Buy agreeing to the purchase, Jefferson got a great deal -- but also got complete control of the Mississippi. Prior to this, the US had access to the river, but the French controlled access from the Gulf of Mexico.

One other factor is that by buying the land, the French no longer had any claims to North America. With someone like Napoleon in power, this was a positive for the US.

Because the Louisiana Purchase was the largest and most extraordinary land purchase in the history of the United States. It was also the cheapest (per square mile). Everyone wanted more: more places to live, more livestock for their farms. The one thing that the United States Government wanted more of was land. And the Louisiana Territory had a lot of land.

Louisiana was owned by France, and New Orleans was a huge French settlement. Many Americans lived in and around New Orleans, and many American ships sailed back and forth on the river. The U.S. Government wanted to protect American shipping and settlements.

Well, why don't you think about it a little bit, and if common sense and knowledge of basic American history don't help, perhaps you might resort to doing your assigned reading.
