I would like to write and somewhat direct my ideas. What do I need to get started? I already have an portfolio, what else would aid me in that direction?

I would suggest looking at your local universtiy or college's for courses in animation. I'm taking a California State University course in animation and manga which I have to say is probably a class you should be in. After two classes each packed with guest speakers and really good industry experts in the field of anime, manga, and comcis I would say that would be your best start.

Practice, for one thing. Continue to write and create! Investigate the possiblities of getting your work out there where others can see it, give you feedback or even put you on the track that could lead you toward that as a career. Are you going to school? Check out a company that you're interested in working for. Sometimes things like internships open up, but in the meantime, keep at it if that's your goal.

I'm not 100% sure if it would help but you could try going on websites for TV channels e.g BBC/Channel 4 (uk) and see if they've got job sections or if they're looking for new talent. They may ask to see some work from your portfolio and you could take it from there...
