I have a collection of old books and I need to get sheets of lightweight clear plastic to protect them, any booksellers out there tell me where this stuff comes from or what it is called and if there is a store in Edinburgh it would be great.

Not sure if these links will be much good to you. Why not ask in some of your local book stores for advice, Im sure they could at least point you in the right direction of a local supplier.

It is expensive, but your best bet is the same material that coin collectors use to preserve coins. That is mylar. If you keep materials in plastic, because of the air that is trapped in the pages of the paper itself, the material begins to age and dry out, which causes flaking and disinigration when opened. However, with mylar oxidyzation does not occur. Seal whatever collectibles you have in mylar and a thousand years from now it will be in as great a shape as when it was sealed. Good luck. You can usually buy mylar at a well reputable camera shop as that is what they use to protect photos in albums. Maybe they even have a site for you to check where you can get mylar sheets at a discount.

Not sure if plastic is a good idea for storing old books. Think plastic covers are mainly to protect books being handled. I went on a course a long time ago by an antiquarian book dealer and he recommended a thick layer of dust.

Contact the Talius in NY. They are a library restoration supply store and they would have what you need.
