Artistic expression. This is universal and it doesn't depend on the dance style. It is true for both experienced professional dancers and complete amateur beginners. This is what counts at the end.

When people are learning how to dance, they need to concentrate on being in the rythm with music, on doing the right steps, on using better technique to move their bodies. All those details like posture, footwork, leg movement, hip movement are not the focal point, those are means to an end. These are all mechanical aspects, if you wish, that one has to master in order to achieve higher goal of artistic expression.

Once you are done and setteld with rythm you can find it any time in any music. But can you bring out the best of the music with your dancing, can you dance the music? Once you figure out how your body works you are no longer concentrated on hips, legs and other parts. Your body is telling a story. This is what's important.

If it's a technical question - the partner's eyes is the focal point, especially when you do a turn, you have to keep your eyes on the partner's eyes as long as you can. it means only a split second goes by that your head is moving without looking at the eyes. To make it easier for you, get "Dirty Dancing" on DVD and all your questions will be answered. There is a good example of the focus on the eyes when she turns. Okay, now, if you don't mean technical, it's definitely the hips. ie: Shakira!
