Because Nepal is a largely agrerian country, ie they depend on agriculture. They grow a lot of rice and need the soil for that purpose. I've been there and have some great photos of rice fields. E-mail me if you would like me to send you one or two tomorrow.

Due to extensive deforestation the steep hillsides in Nepal have been left bare. This has thus increased the velocity of rainwater travelling down the hillsides which inturn removes more topsoil. This then makes it more difficult to plant new trees as their are no nutrients so the problem escalates.

Because the land is mountainous and hilly most of the topsoil in the region is on a constant move down hill, making it hard to maintain any crops
