Not Cheezy? Then don't do a play!
Just kidding!
It's more of a musical but you might want to check out Oklahoma!, Large cast, western themed although in my opinion it is cheezy, very cheezy.
A high school close by where I live did a version of the movie Giant as a play (old James Dean movie) . If they can pull that off you can pull of The Sting.
I think The Sting would make a very cool play!

I don't know what your definition of "large cast" is for your particular high school, but if you would like something that is not a cheesy musical that everyone will be doing soon (2007 is the centennial for the state of Oklahoma), I would recommend one of Sam Shepard's pieces. They are more strong and dramatic in nature, but a high school group should be able to pull it off. The cast size is the only problem. I can only think of two off of the top of my head (True West, Buried Child) and they are 10 or less. Good luck

"The Sting" is Western-Themed ??
Musicals are always cheesey ! That's why they're so danged good !! Loved "Oklahoma", but after 14 different productions I'm worn out for a few years (anyone need full properties?)
Have only seen "7 Brides for 7 Brothers" staged once... but loved it.
"Paint Your Wagon" !! Great !! Though I can't imagine "Wandering Star" sung by a high school boy !! It's for Lee Marvin and no one else !

Oklahoma, Annie Get your Gun, 7 Brides for 7 Brothers,
I think the Sting would be difficult to pull off. But if you are looking in that realm, Bonnie and Clyde. Grapes of Wrath (depressing), Southern - there is Steel Magnolias.

How about taking a non-Western play and setting in the Wild West -- this has been done successfully with "Taming of the Shrew," so why not put a new spin on an old classic?

Try Hank the Cowdog. I performed in this a few years ago and it was a HUGE success, we made a great profit and it was a really fun work experience.
