Do you think its a bit too much? Or are the kids just spoiled and don't deserve all the things they get??

Until high school, there is really no need for your child to have a cell phone. There may be parents who disagree with me, but your kid can't even drive yet. Once kids get to high school, they want more freedom, and cell phones are a good way to keep a leash on them. Fifth graders who have cell phones are most definitely spoiled.

I definately think kids at least under ...12 or so should NOT have cell phones. I see like... eight year olds walking around with expensive cell phones all the time. Kids are not responsible enough to have cell phones, and I doubt a child that young is out all the time without their parents and really need one. Plus, they sell those phone-things for kids, "firefly". Even that would be more appropriate, I think.

To begin with : that depends on how old kids your talking about.

In my view:
Below 12: A definite NO
Above 12 -15 : Avoid giving a phone as a gift to you kid...unless it is a real necessary because both parents are always busy and hard to reach. And even that case, only restricted i.e when the parent needs to be in contact.(Come on parents dont send your kids to school with a mobile!!!)
Above 15 or 18: Teach them to use it wisely.

To substantiate my decisions:
Well like TV or video games...I find mobiles can be really addictive and with the technology getting day by day better, those are not just mobiles but walking gizmos capable of doing everything.
Hence if you do intend to give a kid a mobile...lay down a few rules, like you would for your TV.. and trust me you will not regret it if you teach you kid to use a mobile wisely.
Am I strict parent...well not exactly but kids need to be taught...that there are better things to do ...that spending the whole day...sending SMSs and talking on the phone.(not to mention that its irritating to be talkin to someone while he sits writing an SMS/or playing with his mobile)

I think it's too much. I don't fully believe when people say "it's for emergencies". The kid's going to be spending countless hours calling his friends, not his parents to say something is wrong. Besides, look at how the majority of relationships between kids and parents are! They're either in absolute conflict or silence. Not to dramatize everything, but personally, I feel quite confident saying these things. Cell phones are not the greatest teachers of responsibility out there, also!

Well, personally I think they are great for SOME kids. Now teenagers on the other hand, they should always have them. I think the youngest should be 10 years old. Then, only on a limited plan with restrictions until 13, and then let then have a normal phone, like any other teen/adult.

I don't think they are needed. For those of us who grew up in the 80's and early 90's we never needed them. Our parents knew where we were at all times. Yes I think that kids are way too spoiled. I will not give my boys a cell. If they want them they must get a job and pay for it them selves Just like if they wanted a car. I will pay for their college education. I will not pay for things they don't need. I will know where they are at all times. That is my job as a parent.

I saw an add on tv about a new cell phone that you can program to only be used during certain hours (I forgot what company put it out). So you can program it to only be used after school or between certain hours. I thought about doing it for my 6 year ols in case for some reason he needed to get a hold of me, like he missed the bus or something like that so I could go get him.

My daughter is 12 almost 13 and wants one. The deal is....she has to pay 1/2 the bill by doing chores. She made up a list of what she is willing to do and what she is not willing to do. I made up a chart with the chores that she is willing to do and gave her a schedule...which if done will pay 1/2 her bill...and that's it. The other chores, the ones she doesn't want to do...she can for extra money to spend. She is working very hard right now and I am very proud of her.

i think kids shouldnt be allowed to have cell phones, but teenagers can. Teenagers often are out doing whatever & can't get a hold of you & then if they have a cell phone they will be able too .

my wife has given her 12yr old daughter a cell phone and the kid has lost it once and left it in her jeans once during the wash cycle

its just pure stupidity, what does a 12 yr old need with a cell phone?
