I think it is the trendy illness. I too am sometimes sad and sometimes happy. My ex daughter in law even receives SSI for this. When she doesn't want to pick up her babies it is because she is to sad, If she blew the babies child support it is because she was manic. It is the ultimate excuse for everything.

I'm not bipolar. I agree with you that it's a trendy illness. I have met a few people who are bipolar. I am not a psychiatrist, but one can diagnose anyone with bipolar.

I'm not bipolar. But you cant possibly say that it is an excuse. It is a very real disorder and should not be made light of. I would leave the diagnosis of bipolar to the professionals. Are you a psychiatrist? If not then you should do some reasearch on the disorder. It is very real. You need to have more compassion for your exdaughter in law's condition. I would never wish it on anyone. Your very reaction to her is the exact same reaction that people give to those that know people with bipolar disorder. It is very difficult for them to make friends because nobody will take the time to actually show some compassion for them. Not everything is an excuse.Try some compassion and understanding. Be greatful that you dont suffer from this. It is not fun......I know several people with it and they have a very difficult time of it.

There is more to the clinical diagnosis of bipolar disorder than what you are describing. While I agree that there are some who abuse the system, it's difficult to do. We need to be more accepting of mental illness, like we are of physical illness. I have a close friend who was just hospitalized for mental illness and she didn't want anyone to know because she was embarrassed. It deprived her of support from her family and friends, which is vital to treatment. Mental illness is rampant in our society and getting worse because of chronic stress and our fractured family structure. Try helping out more instead of criticizing her. You might find that she has been able to get by more than you think. Your grandchildren also need support from someone who isn't suffering from mental illness. Get in there and do your part!

I happen to be bipolar and let me tell you that this is the most difficult mental illness out there. I've been to several doctors over the years, gone through several medications, and even wound up in the mental ward of a hospital for three days as a result of my doctor giving me too high a dose of one medication. Ignorance is a good excuse for everything too. I've also taken psychology classes in college, so maybe you should do some reading.

I see what you are saying. Last year it was Fibromyalgia, which I called Fibromyassa.

My grandchild didn't want to waste time with exam taking so she developed a case of ADD. She couldn't concentrate.

Your ex daughter-in-law should be ashamed of herself. It's people like her that ruin it for people who are really sick.

Our society needs some repair work done.....................

I agree too many people take advantage of this illness. We all have mood swings that is what life is all about, that doesn't mean we are bipolar. DA AH.

I agree with you. Another trendy 'syndrome' is the ADD and those types of so-called excuses.

Every one at my school wants to be bipolar

it just gets them out of crap.

That's why we need to cancel health class cuz sooner or later everyone will suddenly have cancer.

there's this kid named Brian who says he is bipolar and my friend nick pushed him out of his chair and Brian didn't say nothin and then Kevin took his pen cap and he got all pissed.

I hate when people lie.
