I read this book a few years back, I even read it twice but I still don't understand it enough to read the sequel, The Amber Spyglass. Is there a prequel somewhere to the Golden Compass I can read or can someone explain the book to me in a simpler format?

The Amber Spyglass, The Golden Compass, and The Subtle Knife are all in the series - but from what I can tell, The Golden Compass was published first, so I don't know whether The Subtle Knife was a prequel written afterwards, or the publication date I have is just a reprint, or whether it's a subsequent book in the series.
