It has max. density when it is 4 degree C.From that point it will expand whether you heat or cool it.

You're not supposed to answer your own question, but you are essentially correct. All other substances will sink when their SOLID form is immersed in their liquid form. But water crystals expand because of the hydrogen ion bonds that cause them only to arrange in hexagonal forms. This means the molecules actually expand when they freeze, making them lighter per unit of volume than liquid water.

That is because it is unique in the fact that water expands when changed to a solid (ice). All other substances shrink when turned into a solid.

i think that the most peculiar of water is that most if not all other matter will expand when heated and contract when cooled, water will expand when frozen, that's why ice will float on water.
as ice has a higher volume for the same mass? means that the density is less.hope that answers your question.
