There are many different kinds of epileptic seizure, and the action required during and after a seizure will depend on the seizure type. Some people experience more than one kind of seizure. Some only experience seizures when they are asleep - these are nocturnal seizures.
First aid for convulsive epileptic seizures:
a. stay calm
b. note the time.
c. prevent others from crowding round.
d. put something soft under the person’s head - like a jacket or cardigan - to prevent injury.
e. only move if they are in a dangerous place, such as in the road or at the top of stairs. Move things away from them if there is a risk of injury.
f. do not attempt to restrain the convulsive movements. Allow the seizure to take its course.
g. do not put anything in the person’s mouth. There is no danger of swallowing the tongue and teeth biting the tongue

I'm in my 40's and have had epilepsy since I was a teenager. When I experience a grand mal seizure a few times I've bitten my tongue, but there's no chance anyone experiencing a seizure would ever bite it off.

No they don't, only if they happen to catch their tongue between their teeth. And all epileptics don't grit their teeth either. There is a quite a big variety in epileptic seizures and their gravity.

No, unless they are in a full blown grand mall seizure they don't usually clamp down on the tongue.
