'Metabolism' is a technical term for 'things going on in the body'. It can be chemical, electrical, physical or mechanical, and the 'marker' for it is heat.

Eating food increases your metabolism, because lots of reactions kick in to digest & distribute the nutrients.

Your liver is the site of a lot of metabolism, because lots of the large-scale chemical conversions happen there. Unfortunately, most of these conversions (eg detoxifying lots of alcohol, which can lead to a fatty liver) produce dangerous wastes or side effects. (When you're cold, or your blood-sugar is dangerously low, your liver will start up some unnecesary reactions to produce heat, or sugars. The survival value outweighs the risk from accumulating wastes)

The most noticeable metabolic boost is shivering. When you're cold, your muscle system will generate unnecessary movements, to produce heat. This heat is exactly the same as the heat that muscles produce when you're using them for exercise or activity.

Because your muscular system is the most available, and the largest, site of metabolic reactions in your body, the simple answer is:

Get up and do something that involves movement.

Preferably, you should try to use as many of your muscles simultaneously, but gently. Try swimming, but don't knock yourself out.

(Movements gentle enough to do continuously, burn fat. Movements requiring effort, and which will produce fatigue, burn sugar, and make you hungry. Most activities require a combination of these types of movement.)

First thing in the morning have a coffee, then exercise for at least 10 minutes. Then eat breakfast. The caffeine will speed up your metabolism but you still need to eat proper healthy meals.

Make sure you eat breakfast, try to eat smaller meals & healthy snacks more often (every 3-4 hours), & exercise regularly - weight training tends to keep your metabolism increased for a longer period than aerobic training.

And make sure to get a good nights sleep. Lack of sleep is linked to weight gain & decreased metabolism.
