i did some touring around europe, i went to ireland to see family in a village close to wexford and everyone was very nice to me even the complete strangers. even in dublin, a large city people were still as friendly.

when i got to england (london) alot of people 'wind you up' in other words really really pi$$ you off just for fun then expect you to take it as a joke. they also tend to pick on you about random things like being Australian or forgetting to shave for 1 or 2 days. also if i asked someone on the bus or tube for directions they would completely ignore me and i am very friendly and not scary looking.

the only reason i'll go back to london is to see relatives but next time I go to europe i will spend most of the time ireland, spain maybe even bulgaria. eireann go brach :P

I love your postscript that you're looking for someone who agrees with you. So it wasn't really a question at all? You only wanted affirmative answers.

Well, OK, I agree with you. Londoners can be less friendly than people in smaller towns and cities, wherever they may be. And that includes Dublin, which is less than a quarter the size of London.

But by the standards of very large Western cities, I think Londoners are relatively friendly. The only time I've ever been completely blanked by someone when asking for directions was in New York City.

And nowhere in London have I ever experienced anything like the rudeness of Parisian waiters (even though I speak French). But I don't take those waiters too seriously, and I think you should adopt the same attitude with the 'cheeky' humour you've encountered from some of the Londoners you've met.

I went to London last year for 2 days before a cruise and I didn't find the people at all to be rude. They were a little snobbish, but you find that in any corner of the world. =) I loved London, and hope to go back sometime soon, so much more I want to see there. I took a taxi cab to a play (Phantom of the Opera) and my cabbie was wonderful, told me about some places I shouldn't miss while I was there for my 2 days, etc.) I loved London, and will never forget my time spent there. =)

I don't think you should judge a whole city just on one bad experience. Not all countries have the same sense of humor and I think english people are in the minority in London at the moment with all the immigrants coming in. Hope you have more fun next time you're in the UK.

I have never been there but just because people in other countries act different than you doesn't mean they are rude. Other countries have different customs and just a different way of life. It's also possible that the only people you met happened to be "rude".

Perhaps the person that ignored you was not from England and didn't speak english.

I spent 5 days in London and thought the people were very nice. If you think the English are rude don't ever go to France, they invented rude.

Well rumours have it that British ppl are really cold and unfriendly.
But I've met a British guy on the net, and is really sweet.
So all I want to say is that dont generalize. Maybe it was ur bad luck that u came accross such nasty people.

I've met some very nice brit people...then again, I was in Manchester then. Why not go there next time?
