I know that sounds funny but I am really unsure. I was married on sept. 23rd. I have been to the courthouse three times to try to get my information to go get my name changed and they had not received the married lisence yet. I talked to the preacher last week and she was just now sending it out. I cant take off work again till the 23rd. A friend told me I could easily commit fraud right now. Which Im not really that worried about. But I dont know what to sign my last name as, like when I go to the bank and stuff like that.

Did you get married at the courthouse?
If you are in the states I believe most states you apply for a marriage license and then the preacher/judge signs it (with you & hubby) and he sends a piece of it to the state for official purposes. You keep the actual certificate that is signed.
That's how it was in my state.
Until you officially change your name with the Social Security Office, you are still legally your maiden name. If you have changed your name at your bank then you should sign your checks under that name. Some financial places require a copy of the marriage license to change the name on the account, some do not. I was able to change my bank accounts & credit cards before I actually got a new SS card.
Your name is whatever that institution has on record.
If your bank thinks you are Jane Doe, then you have to present yourself as Jane Doe, but the IRS, etc... will recognize you as Jane Smith until you change your name. If you don't get the change in time you may have to file your taxes under your maiden name (but still marked as married)

You still have to sign your maiden name until your social secutiy number and your license has been changed over. I have been through this twice already and it can cause some confusement when your in that transitional stage. I can imagine that you want to use youe married name but until the paperwork gets to the correct people you aren't even LEGALLY MARRIED. Its something to think about. Don't put your self in a position that you one day could go to jail for. Let the paper work go through the system and make sure you have both id's in your new name before you sign or use that name on anything.

It is your maiden name. Even after you get your marriage license it is still your maiden name. You need to change your legal name on your Social Security card. http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/ssa.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=315 This is the website for that. Also you will need to change it on your driver's license, which requires you to go in person to the DMV with a certified copy of your marriage certificate. You will also need to change your W-4 Withholding forms with your employer to reflect your new legal name and address. As for credit cards, bank accounts, etc. Most will require you to send a written request along with a copy of your marriage certificate. I'm not sure why your friend would give you such bad advice, you would still be caught. Sign your name as your maiden on everything until you have legally changed it by following these steps. If it makes you happy, you can sign your married name on any unofficial items i.e. correspondence, etc.

If you got married then your husbands last name would be your legal name. Fraud would be using someone elses name illegally , signing for them . I know you need the proof of marriage for DMV to change the name on your license and for the bank , but you should not have and problems.

Your last name is the name on your Social Security Card and Driver's License. Once you get the documents from the court house, you need to get these changed within 30 days. Once BOTH are changed, and you have these documents IN-HAND then you go by your new name.

except for contracts, your signature can be whatever you want it to be ... at the bank, you can sign a new signature card with your married name even if the name on your account is your maiden name .... you can move the money to a new account in your married name with a signature card using that alias ... which is what i would suggest you do. you can use your maiden name as long as you wish as long as you sign with your maiden name, many professional women do.

your last name is the same as your husband's. It changed when you got married. The courthouse will send your packet, but you should've gotten a small paper the day you got married, sort of a temporary "proof" certificate to keep untill the official one comes out. Where is that?

It is not legal until it is filed. That preacher is a joke. She should have popped it in the mail on Monday after the wedding. She is irresponsible!!! Keep on her case til it is in. If she lost it, you will have to get another and get a JP to do it quick just to make it legal.

Your maiden name is your legal name if you haven't had it changed. Just getting married doesn't change your name. Some people change their name when they get married- you don't have to.
