A player will be sent off and shown the red card if he:

uses offensive, insulting or abusive language.

Although this is taken to mean the referee, it in fact, also refers to an opponent or own team-mate.

If a player insults another which in the opnion of the referee constitutes abusive language, he can be dismissed. However usually, the referee takes into account the 'heat of the moment'.
But if the abuse continues after being so warned, the player will be dismissed.

If the abuse was directed at the referee, almost certainly he will be dismissed in the first instance.
In this context, calling a referee a 'cheat' is deemed insulting.

Yes you are correct, there are no specific rules about swearing. Depending on the situation and agression of the "trash talk" it is at the referee`s discretion what happens. If it is directly at him you will be booked or sent off

yeah but no, there is no rule for that. but there is one against players swearing and cursing referees tho. this kind of rule wud b hard 2 implement, bcos how can u define thrash talk? sumthin 2 this ref mite b considered thrash while anotherref mite not think the same.
besides, thrash talk creates an opening for players to vent their frustrations, rather than bottling up all their anger and affecting their playing form.
