Well it depends on which issue you feel is more important. There are a lot of people that vote republican just because they are pro-life. And there are a lot of republicans out that are anti-death penalty and want to help the poor, but they tend to dislike welfare programs. For example, a republican (and also a crook who is going to jail) Gov. George Ryan cleared all inmates from death row as his last act.

If you are more into social programs set up at a federal level and are able to compromise the pro- life views, then you are probably better off voting democrat. There are also democrats who hold the pro- life position. But this will never be a political view held by the party as women's rights groups are one of the many powerful interest groups that have a grip on the party.

So there is no easy answer. It sounds to me like you are leaning left with the social programs and death row, but it all comes down to what you feel you can compromise. Are you ok with abortion staying legal, or are you ok with the responsibilities of social welfare being put more in the hands of state governments and charities? You are left on some issues and right on others... like most people. Its hard to tell where you lean without knowing which issues you are most passionate about.

The other option is that you can vote for a third party, but there aren't many places where that is a reasonable decision.

Well, abortion rights are a pretty big issue to me, so my ideas are skewed a bit. I would say that a person like that would probably be left of center, with how left being how hardlined they were about their anti-choice stance. I mean, really, everyone is pro-life, except, like, Hitler. Does that person think that abortion should always, always be illegal, or do they make exceptions for rape, incest, and health of mother? Or are they like the majority of pro-choicers, who don't like the fact of abortion and want fewer of them, but don't think that making them illegal is the way to go? If it's the latter, they are progressive. If it's the middle, then they're closer to the center. If it's the first, they are seriously hardlined and to the right on this one issue.

And again, which party these people vote for is based more on which issue is most important to them, among other factors. If they're going to be hardline on the abortion issue, they're going to fit better with the Republicans, even though Republicans don't tend to agree with them on the other issues. If anti-death penalty stances and social programs are more important, or if they're not out to make abortion illegal, then the Dems are a better fit. Or it might work out better to vote based on the candidate's stance, rather than their affilliation. For instance, Bob Casey, Pennsylvania's Senate challenger, might be a good fit, because he's a pro-life Democrat. Or, similarly, a moderate Republican might also work, if his or her beliefs fit the voter's.

Left of moderate, or Democrat.

Right of moderate is Republican.
