Basically people can and do take offence at anything these days.
Blackboards are now chalk boards and whiteboards are now dry marker pen boards. Soon I guess we will have to call blackbirds something like yellow-beaked birds or something.
Golliwogs were traditional toys black people made for their own children and now someone says that they are supposed to find them offensive! It's crazy! I have lots of black friends and most of them agree that this sort of thing actually draws negative attention towards black people in general by making them seem to be complainers when actually it's all stupid bureaucracy.
If Robertson's had wanted to cause offence they would have called the mascot Mr N*gg*r or something similar, they mean nothing by this traditional character and should not be penalised for it - this sort of excessive political correctness is stupid.

Quite clearly Robertsons decided to decorate their jam jars with a figure that mocked black people as they thought it a good marketing move. Whereas most people at the time thought that a golliwog was a cuddly toy that just happened to have a black face, a bit like action man had a white face. I guess we'll have to ban action man now or us white folk will think some low life is taking the p*** out of us.

Robertson's Jam[s] were never forbidden to use their Golliwog Trademark - they simply ceased using it in face of public pressure. It has nothing to do with PC. The removal of the trademark came as a result of changing public attitudes. The Golliwog was seen as offencive to black by a lot of white folk. However, a friend of mine from Trinidad, still has his original golliwog from the 1940s when he was a boy. He thinks it's the best childhood toy he ever had. It sits in pride of pace on his mantelpiece.

Scottish soul act The Average White Band used a completely white version of the Robertson's mascot in the seventies which was appropriate and amusing.
If you pulled that one now you'd be dragged away and made an example of.
There used to be 'n*g*er banks' where the coin was placed in the hand of a coloured fellow and by turning his ear, he would put it in his mouth.
'N*g*er' comes from the Latin 'niger' meaning black, that's all.
I still have en embroidered patch of a Robertson's golliwog playing an electric guitar, his foot on a wah-wah pedal.
I would probably get more time for having that than crack cocaine if I was found to be in possession.
Imagine if I had more - I'd be done with intent to supply!
If you'll excuse me, my paranoia has dictated that I hand it into the police station immediately.
I hope they don't call round later - I have a Muddy Waters CD in my collection.
He was black!

Adults are the only people who are racist, not children they see only people. Robinson's gollies were a smash hit with children, who used to collect labels to enable them to send off for a golly metal badge. My friends` children each want a toy golly for Christmas, she is going to have to knit them herself because she hasn`t seen any for sale in the shops.
