265-60 = 18x + 23x

205 = 41x

x=5hrs

3pm+5hrs = 8pm

You want the ships to be 60 miles apart so you have to subtract 60 miles from the total distance. This equals 205. You want a number (the amount of hours or x) where 18x plus 23x equals 205 miles. Solve the equation and find that it is 5 hours. Add 5 to 3pm and get 8pm.

You are look for how long will it take the to ships combined to move 205 miles (265-60). We let x = the time it takes the ships to move this distance, so you have
18x + 23x = 205
combine terms
41x = 205
divide both sides by 41
x = 5
Now since it takes 5 hours to travel the distance you need to add the 5 hours to the start time of 3 pm and you get 3 + 5 = 8, so they will be 60 miles apart at 8 pm.

These things are based on the distance = rate(time) formula.

They're currently 265 miles apart, but you want to lessen the distance to 60 miles, so they have to travel 205 miles altogether.

The distance for ship A + the distance for ship B should equal 205.

18x + 23x = 205
41x = 205
x = 5 hours

Five hours from 3 p.m. is 8 p.m.

Basically, each ship starts from ports 265 miles apart at 3 PM. After each hour, each lessens the distance between them by 18miles or 23miles, so at 4PM, they will be 265mi - (18mi + 23mi). Every hour, the distance will lessen by (18mi + 23mi), ex. 5PM: 265mi - 2(18mi + 23mi), 6PM 265mi - 3(18mi + 23mi) until they are 60mi apart. What hour will it be when the answer to the equation is 60mi?
