My son is 4 months old and couldn't have the circumcision when he was born due to complications, so he just had it done last week. With my first son (2) they put a little plastic ring around the skin trimmed off the end. he has a circumcised look with a puffy ring of skin slightly covering the crown or rim of his penis. About half the head is exposed and peeps out from the skin.
My new son was done by our ped. in her clinic. She didn't use the plastic ring thing. She just trimmed it off and when I got him back it was wrapped in a vaseline gauze. She gave me some instructions and sent us home.
My question is now a week later he is healing just fine but I wonder if she trimmed off a little to much skin. You can clearly see the scar line almost a half inch behind the head. I called the clinic and she said that it was normal. I thought the extra skin was just trimmed off around the head. Is this normal?

Actually she done a good job. I also had my boys circumcised and the plastic ring thingy doesn't give the best result. She most likely used a clamp which removes more foreskin that the plastic rings.
It should be fine when it heals completely, he just got a tighter circumcision than your other son due to her judgement on how much skin she should remove. She (ped) most likely has done many before and has her standard set to trim them back tightly.
Your other son is the one who got a bad circ.

Some physicians cut off a little more than others and there is no set rule on how much foreskin to remove. If She circumcised his penis that far behind the head, she had a reason for doing it. Maybe his foreskin was abnormally long or she did it to prevent skin tags from forming.
My sons were circumcised pretty far behind the head and they grew up with a good result and so is my husband.
I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen a lot of these at the hospital where I work and haven't known of any later complications.

I recently gave birth to a boy and opted to have him circumcised. My OB/GYN did it a few days after he was born. She discussed the procedure with me and the different methods used. I refused the plastic ring method and insisted on the clamp. A little metal bell is placed over the head and the skin is pulled over the bell. Next a clamp is tightened around the bell and the excess loose skin is pulled forward and then trimmed off. The amount cut off is strictly up the the one doing it, and she said she trims enough so that it doesn't reattach or stick to the head. She used EMLA cream to numb the skin and said be barely whimpered.
After he was circumcised and they brought him back to me I examined his little pee. Where the clamp was applied left a scar line completely around the penis, pretty far back behind the rim.
It healed in less than two weeks and the result was a fairly tight circumcision with no slack skin leftover.

Hi Ruby,

Don't worry about it. Both of your sons are completely normal. The plastibell will tend to take the skin right at the end of the penis and some other methods like the mogen where skin in pulled forward and snipped will take more skin from the outside. This is why the circumcision line can be in two different places.

Hope that helps,

Sara

Sounds very normal. Not everyone's head is going to be the same. I think you're mainly worrie because it was done in her office. My son had his done in the Dr's office too. He's fine. Wait until it heals then worry, if it doesn't look right. But again, not everyone will look the same.

Honey, I have 3 sons. All of them circumsized. This is perfectly normal. Just keep cleaning it during every diaper change and applying some vaseline to it each time as well until it's fully healed. It's all perfectly fine and normal.

If they say it's fine then I imagine it would be. I do know of infants who were circumsized and the procedure was botched and they had to go back in and get it fixed. Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't seem right then talk to the doctor. Call around and get different opinions just to be sure.

It's normal. She just tightened it up good and took off the loose skin. Any cut edge of loose skin could reattach itself to the head. That's why its important to keep vaseline on the cut and to keep it pushed back until it heals.
I had my 3 boys done.
