The answer is Actually Mendacious and Probably Meaningless since 12am and 12pm are either the same thing or don't exist since 12 is neither before or after. On a 12 hour clock they should be 12 noon and 12 midnight. Use the 24 hour clock 12:00 and 00:00 are much clearer.

As others have already said: AM - ante meridian, PM - post meridian. The word meridian refers to the longitude line that you are on. This means that during the AM period, the sun has not yet reached its peak and is before (ante) your meridian. Just the opposite for PM, since the sun has passed your meridian.
With the way time zones are set up, this is all a bit fudged, but that is the origin of the words.
