If you're a teacher, contact the parents (or registered guardian/carer) in the first instance.
If you're a parent, contact the school office.

The answer is twofold;
initially the police casn provide a response and take the child back
(there is a legal power they can exercise in order to do this, in fact there are several)
They will just drop them off though.
In the uk child services run by the home office will take long term responsibility.
In general the school or the parents often arent aware of the truancy, and once they are aware will take the relevant steps themselves

If a child is unwell or unable to attend school you should first contact the school secretary, if you are concerned that a child is playing truant then call the Local Authority.

Interesting question... do you work at the school, or are you a parent who's child isn't going to school?
If you work at the school I shouldexpect you might call the parent. If you are the parent you should call school main phone number and tell the receptionist!

My mother would call the school office, then when we returned to school she would send a note in with us.
