Studies show their grades actually improve with a modest amount of extra-curricular activities. It gets them involved/engaged.

not from my own personal experience (I was out smoking pot with the bad boys), but my little sister always had a group of friends from her activities who she had real things in common with. She still has some of these friends 15 years later.

They can learn on a very basic level how differnt types of government work and how the decision-making process is done.
They learn fairness, making choices, etc..
