Maybe it's just a habit, but I always wash off fruits and vegetables before I eat them. I don't wash meat, as someone suggested, since it's going to be cooked, but I wash my hands after handling chicken and beef.
Oddly, my grandparents never worried about e-choli and salmonella and stuff like that. Are we more paranoid now?
Statistically the water and air are less polluted in the US now than they were 25 years ago, but we still get scared of eating something poisonous. It may be paranoia, but I still wash things off before eating them.
I expect people wash vegetables more now with that spinach scare that happened recently.

I try to grow most of my own vegetables because you cannot know what you are getting from a store. If I purchase veggies from a store, I not only rinse but use a vegatable brush. However, just rinsing or cleaning may not mean that you have clean food. Some vegetables, especially tomatoes and apples, are genetically altered and you are not advised of this. No amount of rinsing or cleaning is going to change a genetically altered fruit or vegetable. Also, some pesticides are not amenable to being removed by washing; they are inherent in the product. Our meat is full of antibiotics that have been given to the animals and then to us lessening our chances of our own bodies immunity kicking in if we get ill. I am not a fanatical organic person but am seriously thinking of becoming one. I am more afraid of the genetically altered food than I am of the dirt.

The only time I DON'T wash vegetables from the store is when it's pre-washed baby carrots for dipping. Those seem pretty clean, but after all the e-coli scares, I'll probably start washing those as well.
I was brought up on a farm, and I know the process a vegetable crop goes through. I always, always wash! Ask any farmer, they'll probably agree!

I used to not wash these items, but now I run the sink full of cold water and then add baking soda and this washes off all dirt and debris. This makes me feel a little better, but if they want to kill us off they will find a way!

I buy organic to feed my rabbit and I DO take the time to rinse everything. Even though organic isn't supposed to have any pesticides on it, I still don't want any traces of any potential contaminents to be given to her.

I ALWAYS wash my fruit and veggies off. Just because you don't see the dirt, bugs and bacteria doesn't mean they aren't there. Many of each are too small to see, and often bugs are the same color or tucked under a folded leaf.

Always. I have a membership in a Comunity Supported Agriculture farm so we get fresh veggies weekly (all locally grown) and they are certified organic. I still wash everything before cooking. There is too much junk in the soil now.

I always do. and after I rinse the grapes, I take a damp paper towel and as i pluck the grape I wipe it on the paper towel. You would NOT believe the crap I get off the grapes even after they have been rinsed off.

Really quite easy and simple to do. When you get home just throw them in with your wash. I recommend leaving out the bleach and fabric softner as they just don't taste good.
