I used wikipedia for this one - a ganglion is the fluid that is found in the cavities of synovial joints - which is basically most joints in the body.

The treatment can be a few things:
a) Leave it alone, it might go away
b) Surgery (needle or cutting out, I think).
c) Hitting it with a heavy book, like a bible :-)

Hope that helps, the wikipedia links are useful...

What is a ganglion?

A ganglion is a sac-like swelling or cyst formed from the tissue that lines a joint or tendon. The tissue, called synovium, normally functions to produce lubricating fluid for these areas. A ganglion is a cyst formed by the synovium that is filled with a thick jelly-like fluid. While ganglia can follow local trauma to the tendon or joint, they usually form for unknown reasons. Occasionally, ganglia are early signs of arthritis that will become more obvious in the future.

Where do ganglia form and how do they feel?

Ganglia can form around any joint but they are most frequently found in the wrist and ankles. They are usually painless and often barely visible. They typically do not appear to be inflamed. The largest ganglions form behind the back of the knee. A ganglion here is referred to as a Baker cyst after the doctor who originally described the condition.

How are ganglia treated?

A ganglion can spontaneously rupture and go away. Other treatment options include removal of the ganglion fluid with a needle and syringe (aspiration) with or without an injection of cortisone medication. Occasionally, the entire ganglion is resected with surgery. Persons with a persisting or recurring ganglion should be evaluated for signs of systemic forms of arthritis.

You can't really get rid of it. But i would start with finding a new hobby. And stop writing so much on the computer. Do physical activities with your friends. Set a goal for yourself to only stay on the computer for two hours then cut down every month. It could save you a few bucks on the electric bill!!! ;). Basically find something else to do, if you can't look at what movies are coming on, what events that sound kinda cool. Be out there instead of inside here.

A ganglion is generally some joint fluid that has gotten out of the joint area. It is caused by stressing the joint capsule for some reason. The treatment for that is to hit it with the family Bible. The down side of that is it hurts like the dikkens for several days after that. Surgery is a possibility as well.
Avoidance of activities that aggravate the ganglion is the best preventative measure.

I am assuming you are referring to ganglion cysts. I had one in my wrist removed twice, surgically. THe doctor told me there were three ways to handle them:
1. Wait, it might go away on it's own
2. Surgery
3. Hit firmly with a large book.

Good Luck!

Its an overgrowth of bone usually found on the hand. I had one of these on my wrist and an old fashioned way of getting rid of it is to hit it with a heavy book - worked for me. If its exceptionally big, you could get surgery to remove it.

It's a cyst. You have to go to the doctor or health dept. I had one on my wrist and they stuck a needle in there and pulled out the fluid inside. It looks pretty gross, but it went away and took the pain with it.

Ganglion's are supposedly painless cysts, I had one "appear" on my wrist about 3 months ago. It made is uncomfortable to write or sew, but it must have "burst" recently cos I just read your question and realised that mine has disappeared! Thanks for that!
