Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

for a paid antivirus, i would say go for norton or mcafee

free ones are not as good or complete as the charged ones, but good free ones are AVG as you mentioned and avast antivirus.

if your computer comes with norton, you should use it till it expires then go for a free one because the free ones use less system resources.

Avast v4.7 is the best. It undertakes "On access scan". That is it scans your system part by part even when you r just working in it. It has a sleek modern skin too. Its Virus database is so cool and contains data about the latest virus types and protects u from them. It warns you when u enter a dangerous site containing notorious viruses and moves them to the virus chest. To get it please visit http://www.avast.com.

Here's also a comparative test from most antivirus programs.

My suggestion and if you are not yet ready for complicated configurations and other things, then use the very simple one - ANTIVIR - it's like install and forget.
