Several of the common species of lady beetles (ladybugs, if you prefer) found in Iowa will wander indoors during the fall. However, this is a distinctive and annoying trait of the Asian lady beetle, a relatively new species imported to the United States from eastern Asia.

The "multicolored Asian lady beetle" (Harmonia axyridis), has become common throughout the eastern U.S. and all of Iowa. This biological control natural enemy is a beneficial inhabitant of the landscape but can be a severe household nuisance during late fall and winter.

The Asian lady beetle is approximately 1/3 inch in length and semispherical or dome-shaped. They vary from yellowish-orange to red; deep orange is the most common color. There are 19 black spots on the back that vary in darkness among individuals. The spots may be faint or missing on some beetles. There is a black "W" shaped mark on the thorax.

Asian lady beetles, like boxelder bugs, pine seed bugs and elm leaf beetles, are accidental invaders; that is, "outdoor" insects that create a nuisance by wandering indoors during a limited portion of their life cycle. Accidental invaders do not feed or reproduce indoors. They cannot attack the house structure, furniture, or fabric. They cannot sting or carry diseases. LADY BEETLES DO NOT FEED ON PEOPLE THOUGH THEY INFREQUENTLY PINCH EXPOSED SKIN. Lady beetles may leave a slimy smear and they have a distinct odor when squashed.

Lady bugs are very good to have in your garden but guess not that great to have in you home. They actually live on other garden pests and to my knowlege working in the Horticultural Industry and working with plants every day I have never heard of anyone being bitten by one.
I have even played with them as a child and to this day myself not been bitten.

Lady bugs are plant eaters, no they don't bite. He may want to check the house for other bugs that do bite such as fleas.
