I for one will admit my eyesight is not what it was when I passed my Driving Test. And I know of some old boys who cannot stop a car with a footbreak, but use a handbreak! On Sundays you see the flat cap bregaide out in their cars - barely able to see over the top of the steering wheels, and driving like they walk, SLOOOW!!!
Dangerous! Do you not think it ought to be manditory to have tests after 6O, say every 5 years??? May be one way to clear the roads a bit, and make them safer???

I see where you are coming from you do see alot of elderly drivers on the road who probably shouldn't be driving anymore. But, I think introducing mandatory eye tests for the over 60's would be nothing short of age discrimination. Poor eye site can happen to anyone and saying all older people should be considered potentially dangerous drivers is on par with saying all people wearing a burberry cap whilst driving should be stopped and searched by the police. Ridiculous I know, but it does happen. Instead of concentrating on a particular group of people I think the goverment should introduce a system where everybody has their driving skills evaluated every 10 years or so. This would probably cost alot but the roads would be alot safer.

I think it would be better if they had IQ tests for young drivers and particularly for lorry drivers and white van men. Less than 110 then you do not get a license.
I am 71 and drive an MG do you really think I am SLOW ? If so try and keep up with me.
I also think they should look at people walking round supermarkets. It is obvious some of them aren't even awake and they will be driving on the same road as me! This would be a better way of removing licenses!

I'd say for after 60, every year they should have a test. I know a man that is in his 70's that is driving and should not be. He has to get his wife to tell him if there are cars comming in each direction, and more than once has been in an accident. However, he still has his licence, somehow. They claim that they need to keep his licence because they live in the country, and his wife can't drive, and their 50 year old son that lives with them is legally blind, so they'd be without transportation. I know they have been reported, but still he has his licence. One day, they are going to be in such a bad accident, that he is going to kill someone, or himself.

Did your optician do a test with a number plate at 20 meters? if not get your instructor to do it asap. At the driving test you will be asked to read a plate across the yard, regardless of weather, and have to get it right 1st time. Otherwise instant fail and a report to DVLA about your eyesight. Sorry to be harsh, but there is no place on the roads for people with marginal sight conditions

I am 58 years old I drive regularly. There is nothing wrong with my driving, and I have to be very sharp and alert to avoid accidents with younger drivers who think it funny to cut people up.
When you sound your horn in protest, all you get is abuse. I've seen women drivers doing this as well, so it's not just men driving badly.
I think that if someone causes a major accident, regardless of their age, whether it involves death or not, they should have their licences taken from them and should be made to take a few extra lessons, and re-sit their driving exam before getting their licence back

I have to agree with one of Roy's points about white van men!! I think maybe everyone should take a competency test every 2 or 3 years. That way we will be able to clear the roads of all half-wit drivers.

Absolutely! Teenagers and the elderly are the two worst categories of drivers out there. Teenagers are dangerous because of their inexperience and often immaturity, but the elderly are becoming road hazards because the loss of senses.
Just because Gramps obtained his license 50 years ago doesn't mean he is still capable of driving. And, often times the seniors who need to be off the road are obvlivious to the fact that they need to be restricted. We have other safety nets in place to protect them, why not add this one more safety net to protect them and everyone else oout on the road?

I do agree with you, but I think one problem is that there is not adequate public transportation in many cities and smaller communities. Americans are attached to the independence of their cars and don't support public transportation. They don't realize that public transportation doesn't mean they have to give up their cars. It just gives people more options.
My license in AZ doesn't expire for 25 years, which is way too long. But who am I to argue.

Hmmm... I don't know. It's so hard to say. I guess you have a good point, but I would have to lean closer to the 70-ish range. Most people around 60 are still pretty aware of their surroundings.
