I want to upgarde the HD. that are currently on a raid. can i shut down the server and replace 1 hd and let it reconstruct. then remove another HD and do it again.. and again and again. oviously make sure my backup is good before i start to do this.

It depends on the RAID level and the hardware/software.

Generally, you may be able to use this method to put in faster disks (e.g. from 10K to 15K) but you will not be able to gain more space using this method.

RAID 0 : removing a disk will crash the array, losing all data.
RAID 1 or 5: swapping in a larger disk will cause some space to be wasted
For example, if you have two 72GB disks mirrored (RAID 1) and you replace one with a 146GB disk then the array will resync using only 72GB of the new disk and the remaining space will be unusable.

Doing it the way you described will not achieve what you want. A better solution would be to Ghost the raid to another hard drive (either a big SATA or external USB), or just copy/backup if you don't have access to Ghost. Then rebuild your raid with the bigger drives, making a bigger volume. Then you just Ghost the data back to the new raid from your other disk.
