It's certainly a worrisome development, but I'm not too worried about safety at this juncture. These weapons could, of course, be used in war, or a nuclear accident could be catastrophic for the environment. But today, Russia, India, the Ukraine, Pakistan, France, the U.S., Britain, China and others I'm probably forgetting all have nuclear weapons. North Korea is not a big change to the picture.
Kim Il-Jong is certainly a tyrant. There's no denying this. But he does understand the idea of self-interest and knows (as the USSR did) that actually using these weapons would be suicidal. The international community also knows that it can do little more than condemn and impose sanctions.
The sad thing about sanctions is that ordinary Koreans, people who probably hate Kim Il-Jong and his government even more than you and I, will be the one paying the price. That was the case in Iraq. It leads to ordinary families starving, and having to scurry for the necessary goods to go on with their daily lives.
Also, now that the press is all busy with North Korea having nukes and that George Bush has somebody else to play his tough guy routine with, watch Iran fall under the radar.

My understanding is that they can't hit further than Hawaii. I am not sure about that but that is my understanding. So unless people ignore warnings, we will still have some time to combat anything that comes our way.

As for the immediate reaction, the countries are talking already and saying this is unacceptable, and to think we were worried about Iraq and Iran! Here is a country that is doing exactly what everyone was afraid of and even while everyone was in a big argument with Iran and the war in Iraq for the same basic threat!

I do believe this is going to cause some big issues but I am not sure what will happen. The world leaders have gone mad and no one seems to be completely predictable. I would not be surprised if they do not attempt an attack on N. Korea though. We are worn pretty thin but who knows with this leadership.

First off, there will be discussion between the Asian countries in the region and and the US. There will then be a large debate in the UN. More then likely it will take at least a couple days if not a couple weeks before the UN council decides on what to do. In the mean time countries will scold N. Korea for what they did.
When the UN makes up its mind on what to do, it will more then likely be economic and political sanctions.
The US, Japan and possibly a few other govt's will increase their defence alert for a while.
Japan will not try to acquire nuclear deterrents and the US will probably not get their nukes out and ready because that in itself could provoke war.

confident, the North Koreans have been completely irresponible, finished nicely understanding that worldwide treaty regulations restrict the sorting out of nuclear weapons. The U.N. could have the balls to flow in and dismantle any nuclear reactors they have going. it incredibly is why the full international hates human beings, because of the fact we are the only ones prepared sufficient to push those sanctions under danger of warfare. whilst international locations are dealing with political oppression and tyranny like Iraq, we are those that don't turn our backs to the harmless people who have not have been given any voice, no destiny, we are the only ones prepared to place our sons, fathers and brothers and sisters on the front line no longer purely to combat for our very own freedom, yet in addition the liberty of incredibly everyone in the international. There needs to extra help for aggression against those international locations that constantly defy worldwide regulation. those rogue antagonists are entering incredible weapons, quickly the international will could face the danger now, or some years down the line whilst they have completely more suitable warheads with icbm's that could attain virtually everywhere interior the international. take care of them now on an analogous time as their weapons courses are interior the early tiers in stead of battling them with an arsenal of nukes interior the years yet to come. look, they at this early of a level of their weapons developement are going against the worldwide community and detonating nukes!!! they are utilising those exams to income financially. What makes you think of that interior the destiny they gained't attempt to blackmail different international locations and threaten them with holocaust in the event that they are demands are no longer met. The U.N. needs to speak and talk and threaten sanctions yet look at Iran!! they are nevertheless springing up uranium at their centers without consequence in besides!! we are all going to die if this danger isn't dealt with immedietly!!!

While I don't necessarily expect any government to think through their actions, if N. Korea thinks their actions through at all, they will keep their nuke to themselves. While they may be able to hit a US city or two (depending on how many nukes they can produce), we can obliterate their entire country with ease. With the current "terror" mentality in our government, I don't think our leaders would have to stretch to justify just such an action to themselves.

Most likely, they will simply use it to buy more bargaining power.

Oh, to actually answer your question, people will say bad things about them and start watching their backs because, like I said, not everyone takes the opportunity to think things through.

well, as usual, governments will condemn the regime. that's it. no concrete decision will be taken. there will be talks and vetoes in the UNSC, and Japan and S Korea might declare some warnings, but that's it?
however, a fallout of this could be that Iran will be encouraged to carry out similar tests faster

well a UN resolution will be drafted the language will tough in the first draft, then China, Russia, and France will water it down.

Kim will thumb his nose at it, and Chavaz will stand up and support him along with Armaj(however you spell his name (iran))

We'll pussyfoot around for a few more years till Iran has a nuke, and they give one to chavez. It willbe interesting, with iran hating israel, the koreans hating the other asians, and chavaz wanting to rule South America.

The most probably immediatte reaction will be BLAH, BLAH, BLAH, then maybe a resolution or two. But most of the world is content to let it go.
