They died from infection or some sort of sickness. If a soldier was hit, they most likely lived since the bullets had low velocity and were round. However they had extremely primitive medical techniques, and most likely always amputated. After that, infecton often set in, killing the soldier.

Most of the solders in the civil war died from sickness. There were several outbreaks of influenza, and other illnesses of that type. Also, the medical doctors at that time, had no knowledge of infection, or any type of germs. They didn't wash their hands, and or their instruments between patience.

Despite the lack of cleanliness, they did have a lot of modern technology. They would sometimes knock the patient out with ether,(Only those that were combative with the surgeons.) and they would give the patient morphine, after the surgical procedure.

The surgeons thought that a wound wasn't healing, if it didn't puss up properly. So the would take the puss from one patient, that was pussing properly, and put it into the wound of a patient that wasn't. That patient would often develop an infection, and die.

During that time, the surgeons would sew the patients up with silk thread. Towards the end of the war, silk was getting hard to come by, so they started using horse hair. Because horse hair came from the back of the horses, that is were the horses did their business, they would boil the horse hair. The surgeons started noting that the patients sewed up with horse hair had a better survival rate.

Good luck.

They died during the battles!! There were a series of battles, and there was a lot!!And this is true but i can't give you the actual number. MOre soldiers died in that war than in the first few years than the majority of the wars combined!! NO joke. It was a high casualty rate on both sides. ANd if they didn't die instantly they died from the wounds for lack of medical technology back in those days. There were no anesthetics or pain medicine. Watch the movie glory.. that's a good account of a piece of the civil war. But for a straight answer.. Google it....

They died from massive infections because the sanitation and sterilization of medical equipment was nearly non-existent and anti-biotics had yet to be discovered for treatment of infections.
