Frame Relay etc. so there are some ways... however phoneline and cable are good and cheap for home users, above options are for companies, schools etc.
And scientists are studying on internet over electric lines, and they managed to do it however it costs alot right now, they are trying to make it cheaper so they can sell it.

when I am away from my primary work computer, I have an internet enabled Sidekick II from T-mobile.
