who says that we have to belong to any religion? I have attended a lot of 'Humanist' funeral services and they are much , much better than any conventional religious services. Atheism has got a lot to say for it. Are you particularly religious in leading your life?

As long as you don't mind spending eternity in hell.

I don't know an awful lot about humanism, but from what I've seen of it, it seems much more rational than any of the other so-called "religions".

I have attended two funeral services, performed by humanists and both were great. They spoke about the deceased having spoke to the relatives, talking about their lives, achievements, families, etc. There was no priest saying how wonderful this person was when they hadn't even met them.

Humanists seem to know what they are talking about, its based on the person not a fictional book, led by corrupt paedophiles and thieves.

I'm an atheist, but if I was ever to follow an organisation it would be humanism!

Well, first of all, I wouldn't call "humanism" a religion - seems to me it's more an attitude which says human beings have no-one else to look out for them other than themselves, and that if we don't sort things out in the here-and-now rather than waiting for some notional afterlife, we're going to be in trouble. So is it "better" than religion? Well, how many people do you know who've been killed in the name of "humanism"? And if I'm a humanist, I can't say (as one of your other answerers did) that you'll burn in hell if you don't think the same way as I do. I mean, how arrogant is that?

Yes it is. At least it's not founded on something in which we have no legitimate reason to believe. A Jehovah's Witness once asked me (after I had stated my views) "But don't you want to believe?". That says it all to me. Organised religions are for people who want to believe. Faiths appeal to the child inside, and the need to think that "everything will be alright no matter what". Not so. Face facts, take responsibility, be a grown up. Love each other, and try to do good. Then die.

i thought the idea of religion was to treat every one in a humanist way I am not an Atheist but i don't follow a religion i follow my own beliefs and interpret the bible to my own understanding and have respect for other peoples beliefs. the bible said its a sin to listen to the teaching of man and also worshipping in public is vanity and pride, and we don`t need to worship in buildings of stone as god is in us and around us, and that's what i believe along with(do as you would be done by)which to me is the measure we should live by IE; if you wouldn`t like it don`t do it to someone else.

humanism is more of an alternative for religion, i am an athiest but i have interests in several religions and spirituality thingys!!

religion is the shell god died in, religion is just stiff and dusty traditions and written in stone beliefs - unable to change, and what cant change dies
