Ah, the "U" conspiracy. It was just the way we were taught to spell. I don't understand it myself.

I'm not sure they hate the letter but just to keep themselves different and to make their own basis of language and pronunciation. Unlike the proper English spelling of course.

Maybe cuz we speak American, our own language that is only derived from English. It's just our own thing. We have lots of slang and dialects and I hear it's quite difficult to learn, if you are not familiar with it. But it's all ours!

Because it seems that the U is a little unnecessary. "OUR" in the American language, is more often than not, pronounced like 'Hour' or 'Sour.'
