What is your time frame? If it is the late 1960s, he might be there because there was a college deferrment that allowed him to avoid the draft. Therefore, his major would be irrelevent.

Most "hippies" winded up cutting their hair and going into mainstream jobs -- so they could have majored in anything.

But if you want someone to have a major that embodies the hippie lifestyle -- then there are a few obvious choices for a major:

1. Philosophy -- because they are interested in connecting to the universe, man.

2. Pharmacology -- because of the obvious.

3. Environmental sciences, because we are all connected to the the earth, man.

This hippie went to college and majored in political science, one of the two biggest majors in my giant hippie college during the 60s and early 70s. The other was psychology.

Today, at most universities, the "crunchy"/ hippie folks major in environmental sciences or environmental studies, film, and/or geography, and are interested in "sustainable agriculture" and the like.

Decades ago, most hippies majored in philosophy and political science.

Absolutely anything they wanted to study! It's just unfortunate that they've fallen into the whole stereotype of being crazy art people!
