Did it stop because it was only lust ? For most people lust only is short term. Lust lasts if it is part of a bigger picture. Lust only is a loner thing, so not much should happen emotionally . . . they were really just into themselves anyway. Physically, some stress will build up, but that's why the JO option is there. It will suffice since the lust only person cares about themselves only.

Sex is addictive for some people and I say people because women are included as well. Sometimes it leads to rape for men if they can't get it willingly and some women fall prey to prostitution. Although, I have heard of male prostitutes. I think self gratification does work however it's not like the real thing. I'm not saying all men who can't have sex all the time go out and rape women and not all women fall prey to prostitution. Just the very few who don't have good self control, self esteem and are desperate.

Sex releases pleasurable chemicals into the brain, so the absence of sex causes a short-term rebound effect, resulting in feelings of dissatisfaction or even depression. Psychologically, an absence of sex can create feelings of loneliness and social disconnectedness.
