Goths are the MOST family oriented people you will ever encounter, believe it or not. They only want to love, have children and live their lives without all the mainstream bullcrap of the world. They hold true to their principles until their children grow up to question them and the cycle of rebellion continues.

The thing is that Goths are not just teenagers. We are also mature people with very sophisticated careers.

Goth is a reflection on how many people view the world. Sometimes, it is a phase in the teenage years, but often when a person continues to be involved in the culture after that, they are continuing to view the world as a dark place. And the world is dark. It's not pretty and happy and sunshiny. There is evil and hate and anger and pain. Goths just choose not to ingore this like society wants. That doesn't, however, mean we are mopey and sad all the time. Have you seen Goths party? We DO have fun.

To be fair Goths aren't freaks. Most teenagers who have an iota of intelligence and artistic nature will find their teenage years a little depressing. They are surrounded by dimwits who only want to know whose sexier Brad or Johnny, whose t*ts are bigger J-Lo or Madge, and find this moronism quite disconcerting. As a result they feel a little negative, and parts of gothic music echo this, thereby connecting with this group of people.
In addition, dressing in something other than brand names, gives them a greater freedom to express their individuality, whilst not standing out too much, because they then hang around with people of similar taste.
There is also a great history to gothic itself, being a form of Architecture, and a style of literature. The gothic novel tends to study the human condition, has eroticism instead of porn, features love and romance on a deep spiritual level, rather than the shallow way it's portrayed by Hollywood today.
Some gothic music even sounds good; the 'Sisters of Mercy's music is currently being used to promote such programs as 'Hex' and 'Robin Hood' for TV. Generally, goths will outgrow this taste in music, developing towards other writers, though at least most gothic songs are well instrumented and have well crafted lyrics. A tad more serious than Beyonce.
Give it a try, the clothes, makeup, unisexual lifestyle and music can be quite emboldening, and fun.
Personally, I was a 'new romantic' in the early 80s, which was a bit like a happy-go-lucky goth, OTT clothes (very cavalier), make up (though not all black), and great music. It was a great way of meeting girls.

In some cases it can be. I, however, can speak for myself in saying that when I chose to dress goth, had no bearing on my opinions (of ANYTHING). Years have passed since I have had a completely black wardrobe, but I haven't changed my opinion of the world. Of course, I am not considering the changes that evolve as we grow older, which is a natural process, and not relevant to this question.
I very much disagree with the second answerer's comment about staying away from anyone who is/dresses goth. I'm sure if she were to meet me on the street, she would pass no judgment on my character now, because I dress differently than what I did when I was younger- my mind is still the same. I find it pathetic that people base judgments on people due to encounters they have had with others. Goth is self expression at its finest. I have never formed an opinion on someone before I got to know them. This is quite possibly one of the reasons our society is all screwed up.

Yes, that's true for real goths. They see the pain and evil in the world and accept it as an inevitability, which is not to say that they like it. They deal with the bad things in life by thoroughly exploring it, using their intellect, artistic talent, emotions, and humor. They celebrate all aspects of life in their own way, which means realizing that they (and everyone else) is going to die one day. Although most goths have a certain "look," it is by no means mandatory, since being goth is an internal thing.

Yes, although it's also an expression of how they see themselves, or how they perceive others view them. It's either an attempt to tell the world how disassociated from it they are (by conforming to the Goth lifestyle... ironic?) or an attempt to tell the world how downtrodden they feel in it. They're expressing negativity, either from internal or external forces. But the fact that they ARE expressing it is an outlet instead of bottling that all up. Remember the old adage... it's the quiet ones you've got to look out for.
