There were always three when appearing on screen but there have been 6 all together. Moe, Curly and Shemp were brothers and their last name was Howard. Larry Sharp was just a friend and business associate. Joe was a gayish add-on after Curly died and Shemp refused to continue. Curly Joe was even yet another bad attempt at reviving the Stooges in their declining years.

There were two more. Joe DePalma was the 'Fake Shemp' stand in when Shemp had a stroke. He wore a wig and was seen from the side. He was the fill in so the contracted four final shorts could be completed.

Emil Sitka was almost a stooge when Larry Fine had his stroke, but Moes failing health nixed any more films. Emil was planned to be Harry, taking over for Larry's character.

There were actually 6 stooges.....

Larry, Curly & Moe are the ones most people remember because they were the ones that lasted the longs. Larry & Moe were the ones who were always stooges. Curly Joe, Shemp and Joe were the other three.
