Fish have the ability to change sex from male to female and vice versa. Usually when you have several of a certain breed, you get both sexes, otherwise you can't tell especially if you just have one goldfish in the tank.

Knowing if a Goldfish is a Boy or Girl
Sexing young goldfish is virtually impossible. You have to wait until the fish reach breeding age: about a year.
And even at that point experts aren't able to tell until they actually begin breeding.
Here is more advice and input:
* Unfortunately, you really won't know. The only way to tell if a goldfish is a male is if it is mature, ready to breed, and there is a mature female in the tank with him also ready to breed. Now assuming there are females in the tank, the male will show raised bumps or "pimples" on the gill covers whch are the same color as the fish. (If you have a fish with spots anywhere that are white or any other color than the fish, there is a problem, that is a different question.)
* The female goldfish has a fanned fin and the male has a fin that sticks out.
* Basically, you can't. Not until they're sexually mature. That means a year old. Even then no certainty is possible. Really, only another goldfish can tell. So the best method is to wait till breeding time and watch behaviour. Males chase females. So the chaser is nearly always male, the chasee female.
* When boy goldfish want to mate, they get white spots on their tail. If your goldfish has a spotty tail, it's definitely a male. If it doesn't, it's a girl or a boy who's just not ready yet. If your goldfish is completely covered in white spots, it is not a show of boyishness but is actually ich, a disease caused by a parasite. Most of the bigger pet stores sell medicine for ich.
* To sex goldfish you must wait until breeding age (over one year) and breeding season. The male will develop tubercles on the gill covers. These are small white bumps. The females stomach area will enlarge as she fills with eggs. Also, the female will have a slightly larger and protruding vent (anal opening). And they will also look lopsided.

Look at the back fin on the bottom. If it is flared out it is female, if it is straight back it is male.
