I want to look around for support groups and stuff that improve your confidence, kinda like AA, but for people with low self-confidence and low self-esteem and for being able to be more sociable with strangers and people in general. What are some terms I can use to explain what I need when searching around my community for such a group, if it exists?

If you feel the need to put a label on it, you could call what you have "mild social anxiety". Or just say you're looking for a "confidence booster".

First, check with your local mental health clinic or your local NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Health). Both of them should be able to point you in the right direction. To find your closest NAMI office, go to:

Toastmasters is a group that helps people with public speaking which is a real confidence builder. (It is often suggested for people with social anxiety.)

If your community has an "alternative" newspaper, look in there for "self-actualization workshops" or something of that nature.

I've never heard of anything like that. You're better off checking out books in the library. But you can check with your local mental health agency. I'm sure they know of support groups. Also, check the local YMCA. That is a frequent meeting place.
