1. Wild caught pets never do as well in cpativity as captive bred animals will. It will not eat as well and will suffer from stress-related conditions for years. It also has parasites that in the wild are controlled in various ways, but with the stress will tend to weaken it even further.

2. Most box turtles are protected by law in their ranges because they are becoming endangered. By removing one turtle, you might be causing trouble for the entire area since there are now fewer turtles to add to the breeding pool.

3. We don't know what species this is. If the belly is a solid plain tan or similar color, it is an Ornate box turtle. If the belly has a pattern, it is related to the Eastern box turtles.

In the Eastern Boxes, if the shell is rather plain and brown or tan, it is probably a three-toed box turtle. Otherwise it is likely an Eastern or Carolinian

4. In the Ornate box turtles, we can sometimes tell sex by eye color- red or bright orange/yellow eyes are male, duller eues are female.

5. In all adult box turtles, the male has a long, thin tail while the female as a short thick one. The male also has an incurved belly while the female's is flat or outcurved. None of these are noticeable in young turtles.

6. Box turtles do best outdoors, but can be kept inside in a pen about 4'x4'. Box turtles need a decent amount of heat- about 80 degrees, and the Eastern box needs fairly high humidity. They need special lighting with ultra-violet rays, and other things. They are NOT a real easy pet to care for well.

7. Box turtle diet is mostly insects, with some vegetables and fruits. A lot of people tell you to use lettuce or hamburger, which ARE NOT good for ANY turtles!

8. just another consideration: Box turtles want to hibernate, and become very tough to care for in the winter. Hibernating them is dangerous for beginners, and not hibernating them takes work to keep them healthy and active all winter.

9. The websites listed below can help with cares, diets, etc.

Bottom line- I'd appreciate it for a few days, then release it before it gets too cold out!

Three basic ways:

1. The tail - most reliable sex determining feature.
The tail of a male will have the cloaca (butt hole!) positioned farther down the tail located beyond the edge of the plastron and in most cases, beyond the edge of the carapace as well. The tail will also be obviously longer and thick at the base than that of a female.

A female's will usually be much smaller with the cloaca located close to the body.

2. The Plastron
The plastron of a male is typically indented, some individuals more than others.

The plastron of a female is most often flat.

I believe this is because the female needs the room for eggs, and it makes it easier for the males when mounting a female to have that indentation.

3. Coloration
This is the most obvious, and the first thing anyone notices about a box turtle.

The eyes of a male are usually bright red. Males will also tend to be brightly colored, especially around the head, neck and front legs.

Females will tend to have dark brown to reddish brown eyes, and are usually the drabber sex.

This is the least reliable method of sex determination.
I have seen females with red eyes, and some are quite colorful

If it's got bright makings, it's probably a boy, if it doesn't , probably a girl. You can check their tail, but if you don't know what you're looking for, then it's hard to tell. I've handled Turtles long enough to tell. You know it's illegal to have them as pets right? It is, unless you have a special license. You better let it go. Its' the right thing to do.
I am very serious, they are classified as an endangered species now, and you know that they carry some disease like salmonella.

Eastern Box Turtle: "The head, neck, and legs of the box turtle are also
brightly colored with yellow and orange, particularly in the males. Male box
turtles usually have bright red or orange colored eyes while the eyes of the
females are usually dark red or brown. Male box turtles also have a slight
depression in the middle of their lower shells while that of the female's is
flat." (from http://wildwnc.org/af/boxturtles.html)

i'm able to in basic terms answer a number of those questions, based upon own journey. we've field turtles that stay interior the wild around my community. they are many times tender brown with a yellow underbelly, yet some get a pink veined coloring around their openings. perhaps it truly is in mating season. they like to devour end result and vegetables, like tomatoes and peaches, and virtually anythign that falls off the tree. additionally they like lettuce. So watch your vegetable backyard in case you get one and make a habitat for it on your backyard. they could be corralled with rabbit twine -- something it is smalle nough their shell will not extra wholesome by using it. they do no longer spend their existence in water, besides the indisputable fact that. they are land animals and prefer to roam. I finally end up rescuing them off the line almost each and every weekend as quickly as I get out early. they have a variety of "i pass this way and nothign is going to provide up me" attitude. i do no longer understand how old they get, yet I even have seen 2 of them that became probably 10 pounds or extra, and their shells get super bumps. They get ridges like dinosaurs on their neck and tail. They scent poor so evaluate conserving it outdoors or interior the storage quite than on your room. Like maximum animals, they like a type of ecosystem -- gtall grasses to cover decrease than, sunny spots to sunlight in while they get chilly, a rock to sit down down on, a small puddle to drink from, dew on the grass to drink, and a type of plant existence to nibble on.
