Hey everybody, I am moving into an apartment for my first time. But I have no Idea on how to turn on the water or electricity. What are the steps in doing that. And is there a charge for turning them on ?

The answer above is correct. Talk to the leasing office and they will tell you exactly which utility companies they use.

If you are paying all your own utilities then all you have to do is call them. If the utilities are included then they stay in your landlords name.

All you have to do is call the water company in my area that is the town where the apartment is located. Then call the electric company. The name of the company depends on where you live. Ask someone who has a place the name of the electric company or look in a phone book.

Call them before you move in to make sure there is seamless transition. Just give them the date you are going to move in.

I think it all depends on the company if they want to charge you a fee for switching over to your name. Most companies don't if the stuff has not been turned off yet. Because all they have to do is switch it over at the office.

Who will pay the utilities? If landlord pays, then tell him/her that it is off and if they could help you turn it on.

If you are going to be responsible, then you need to call the utilities in your town to set up an account and at that time ask them if they can come out and turn on your water and your electricity.

You need to contact your local water and electricity company and they may require a deposit since it's your 1st time.
