for a beginner i would suggest that u get him a gba or a nice nice fender strat......... if u've got serious cash you might wanna buy him a Gibson SG (one of the best guitarz out there)........ and u can obviously try Ibanez for some beginner guitarz......... anyway that's all electric........ if u want acoustic, then u may wanna try J&D or Fender again...........but if ur lookin to buy him an electric guitar, then u gotta buy an amplifier too ( u probably already know dat, but wat the heck??) For amplifiers, u can check out Line 6 or Marshall or Boss or Kustom Sound!!!!! And another thing, u can ask about medium jumbo frets for fat n sloppy fingerz (no offense). Good luck \m/

There are two kinds of guitars, those with steel strings and Folk and Spanish guitars which have gut strings.
Playing the guitar is very easy with the gut strings, particularly for newbies because fretting the strings, that is pressing the strings onto the frets,( those metal bits which go across the finger board) is painful, and this pain is the reason that many young people do not persist with the guitar. Steel strings compared to gut do hurt.
May I suggest that you do not spend a lot of money on the first guitar.Of course he wil not be happy with a gut stringed guitar because he probably sees his heroes on T.V.crashing out the chords and playing mind bending riffs. I;m afraid it is a long and hard road to reach that stage, but for you it may cost less in the long run.to see how he takes to gut stringed guitar.
If he persists and develops very hard skin on his left finger tips, and can change chords smoothly then, he is well on his way to becoming a guitarist and you can confidently take him to the music shop for him to make his own choice.. but if it is just a whim! There are so many second hand guitars out there..

Well that depends. Assuming you want your son wants an electric guitar (which almost all beginners do), I'd recommend any Fender guitar (www.fender.com depending on your price point) if you're sure he will stick with it. I use a Fender Telecaster as my main guitar, and I love it. If you're not sure he will stick with it, I recommend a Squier. They're the lower level section of Fender guitars. While obviously not as good, they offer the same models (Fender Stratocaster to Squier Stratocaster) at a much lower price.

there are several different types of guitar
acoustic classical, nylon strings. like Segovia played
acoustic folk, metal strings
electric lead guitar (Eric Clapton etc)
electric base guitar
I think you need to give him a budget and send him to the guitar shop. Or you can just buy an electric lead guitar on eBay , let him try it for six months, sell it back on eBay and buy a better one when he knows better what he wants.
Most people who start to play only get so far then give up. A large expenditure is probably not wise!

well any good music shop can tell you that something like fender is the best make to go for but i would 100% advise learning on an acoustic as they are more complex then an electric so once you know the basics of acoustic then you can play electric with ease, also acoustic guitars are usually cheaper :-D

Get him a secondhand fender or gibson. Lots of pawn shops, music stores, even ebay sell them cheap.
Those starter kits they sell are made cheap, and not worth the money in my opinion.
At least with a fender or gibson, you'll be able to get your money back on a re-sell if your son doesn't pick it up.

Strong suggestion: Buy a decent guitar as one that is substandard will curb his enthusiasm... even if you have to pay a bit more.
If you go for a Yamaha you will always get a excellent value for money. Definitely go for Yamaha!
