I put both the seat and lid down everytime I use the toilet now as my mother and sister used to complain everyday about it. But if men should put the seat down why don't women close the top seat cover after use?

Fair point LB but if the man has a weak bladder can he leave the toilet seat up?

Sorry, I'm not trying to promote sexism here. I'm just trying to understand women a little better.

considering the amount of germs located in the toilet the seat AND lid should be put down before you flush. you would be suprised to know exactly how many millions of germs shoot out of them toilet when it is flushed.
this is partly why you should also wash your hands too.

From what I understand from my mother and grandmothers it was considered rude and dirty to be able to see the toilet bowl when you walked into a toilet. In any "proper" household all the _lids_ would always be down after use by both sexes.

Personally I grew up with that old fashioned outlook so it's what I prefer to do but I don't judge people for not doing so and if I happen to find it open I'll just close it.

I do see though in some of my friends relationships that they argue about it but it honestly has nothing to do about whether the lid, or in most arguments the seat, is up or down. It's about power, who has it and who wants it. That is why this argument often goes hand in hand with the one over who takes out the rubbish!

Well, your question is very fair. If we live in equality then the right thing to do would be to lift/lower the seat to suit. If I see the toilet seat up I just put it down for myself but I don't lift it up after use. I never had a problem with my man (or when I lived at home with my dad and my brother) leaving the toilet seat up. Sometimes they put the seat down or even put the lid down. I think those women who whinge about it have nothing better to do and their lives are very sad. So, don't worry about the toilet seat issue leave it or lift it, it only takes a second and it will not make you miss the train...

Really the toilet lid and seat should be down before flushing therefore who ever uses it next either just lifts the lid or both. Why do you think there is a lid?? Its to stop whatever you deposit in the loo from vapourising into the air when you flush. Generally I don't really care about the seat argument but it does annoy me when guests don't put it down in my house. Girls house, girls rules I say. I also prefer it when men actually hit the target ie.in the toilet and you are not having to place yourself so as not to get a wet sock / backside.

As many people have already stated, lots of us (both men and women) put both lid and seat down before we flush for hygienic reasons.
Personally, I think the majority should rule: If I were living with five men, I wouldn't expect them to put the toilet seat down. If it was one man and four other girls, toilet seat should stay down.

Good question. I am a woman and I DO put the top seat cover down after every use for two reasons. #1 it's the most hygienic way to flush a toliet. Less microparticles of water get sprayed around the bathroom when the top cover is down. #2 it's really no fun to fish an accidentally dropped item out of the toliet, even if it is clean.
Nothing very psychological about my answer, but that's why I do it.

I used to ask for the seat to be put down years ago. Then I asked myself why. I had no real answer other than in the middle of the night I might fall in. lol. So I stopped asking and just started looking before I sat down! I saw it as...I need the seat down to go, he needs the seat up to go...so why should I ask him to put it down if he's not asking me to leave it up? Although now we both put the seat and the lid down because the cats will drink out of the toilet if they are up. EWWW. lol.

I don't know why. Personally, I don't care. But, a couple of times, in the night, I sat down on the rim instead of the seat. What I learned to do is turn on the light!! If I happen so see the seat up, I just put it down. It is no big deal.

let's just say women have to use the toilet seat for both types and men for one. in total 3 out of 4 types of toilet (2 types for each gender) needs the seat down so the majority wins. Also it takes longer for women as it is as they have to undress so why not be polite and give them a head start! But overall it is more pleasant with the seat and lid down!

Its not just the cold porcelain. You've seen the rim of some toilet bowls. Now say you stumble to the bathroom 1/2 asleep. You have a job to do that requires sitting. Its dark and you forgot to check the seat. Would you want to sit on a bowl rim full of urine from dribbles and bad aim with some pubic hair thrown in for good measure? Probably not.
