It was entirely fictional. But the marketing campaign was basically one of the first 'viral' marketing campaigns that used the Internet. It was made to appear to be real.

Its a fictional story that was shot in a certain way to LOOK as though it was real amateur footage!
(and if it WAS real, there wouldnt be a sequel, but there IS)

It's fiction. It was also one of the most annoying movies I've ever seen. I got so tired of listening to that girl whine, cry, and *****, I almost walked out.

a little of both. the myth is supposed to be real but the film isn't a documentary, it's just made to look like that. the people in the movie were actors.
