Ask them what they would like to do to help other people or help their school. They will come up with some great ideas.

Then you pick one that seems doable and you let the class do it.

Last year my Brownie troop cleaned up the playground (with vinyl gloves on, of course.) I was so proud of them b/c it was their idea, I just asked them how we could say thank you to the school for letting us meet here.

some suggestions

After lunch have your class clean up the trash left behind...

Visit a retirement center and bring hand made cards to the residents. They can also sing some songs.

Adopt a family and have each student bring a dry good and gift between now and Christmas. Present it to a needy family.

Make arrangements to visit the local fire station, most have programs set up for classes and have the students present thank you cards to the firemen.

Call the City Hall and ask if they have any programs or literature on community service for kindergartners.

Have fun.....

I think it would start in the classroom: Be respectful of your classmates, help when you can, keep your materials neat and put your trash in the waste can. Then expand it to the community, perhaps with trips to library, zoo (lots of opportunity for improvement there), museums, nursing home, etc. You know better than we do what five year olds can comprehend. Good luck.

Have them plant trees. And teach them how the trees benefits the community by filtering carbon monoxide and producing oxygen.

make a list of things they can do to help the community....pick up papers in the park, shows examples of things they can do and take them to do the service as a field trip

Just being good to each other is a big step. Little kids tend to be a bit with the "me me me" mentality so if they learn to share & perhaps give something to someone less fortunate than themselves would help.

Take the little guys out and have them pick up some trash. Maybe they'll grow up and not be one of the ones that throw it out.
