People always take things personally,i bet by this statement tons of idiots are going to say I'm not quick to jump to the defensive or not all people jump to the defensive...you are making a general statement,anyway to the rest of the non stagnant people,tell me why it is that people feel attacked even when there is no opposition?

i sound aggresive due to the fact that this very scenerio happened to me,I mentioned something and people jumped to a defensive point of view.When you mention something and a couple of people(women)jump down ur throat you bound to come off as aggresive.

You no that's a very good question!I answered a question Sat.that was putting down a group of people,that Yahoo has given a separate section to.I was shocked to see that the question was asked by a person belonging to a race that has had to fight for equal rights for years.Some one I would think to be a bit more understanding at how the other group feels,with people not accepting them so freely.She has left two messages on my site,addressing me with racial slurs,that if the tables were turned I would probably be hunted down and a discrimination suit filed against me.In my answer at no time did I call names,or give "put downs" to her race.My point being,you would think coming from a race that has been discriminated against,would be more sympathetic.All I did was point out that perhaps with what her people have been through,that she would leave this other group alone.My stand is this,if you can't handle the truth,then you probably shouldn't ask the question.Very good question,and I'm going to check back from time to time to see the remarks left here.I guess this is why it's almost impossible for anything to ever get settled in this world.Everyone is on the defensive.Take care and God bless.
P.S.I agree to the second answer on the one below me,about people being insecure.That really makes sense.And I believe about people feeling threatened.But it's a really sad state of affairs to feel threatened on the internet,on a question and answer site.But those are valid points.

Good question. I work with a woman like this. She is so bad that it is easier not to bring up certain topics when she is in the room. I think this may happen as a result of things that have happened to a person over the course of their life; A person will become overly sensitive. But I will be watching for better answers.

It is natural to feel you are under attack when someone criticizes. When you say "feel attacked even when there is no opposition," I don't think you are being realistic. No one -- OK, no one but a truly paranoid person -- feels attacked when there is no opposition. They may feel attacked when you do not feel you are being an attacker, but you are judging "opposition" as something more extreme than they are.
If someone says something negative to me, I feel their negativity. If I care what they feel about me, I try to correct their impression. Is this being defensive, in some clinical sense, or responding rationally to an affront? It's all in the vocabulary you use.
Have you ever considered you may seem far more aggressive and critical than you intend to be?

I think tat often people become defensive when:
1. they feel personally threatened or
2. they are insecure and lack self confidence
