Especially during election years, I see political parties vying for office by condemning their opponents record and beliefs. More often than not, the most corrupt and self-serving politician is the winner. In a democracy, who is responsible for these errors and how can they be corrected?

As Abraham Lincoln put it...

"As a nation of free men we will live forever, or die by suicide."

Or, as the comic strip "Pogo" put it...

"We have met the enemy, and he is us."
Take your pick.

How do we correct it? That's the problem. We don't, until people care enough to be informed; and they won't be informed until they believe that what happens in politics is more relevant to their lives then who wins on American Idol. If you have a way to pull THAT off, please let me know.

Ultimately, the people. As long as the electorate continues to support politicians who preach and encourage division among the citizens of this nation. Two election cycles in which voters did not support candidate's negative campaigns would probably change the campaign atmosphere.

Unfortunately this would be a very difficult plan to enact. Too many voters are actually swayed by the first, or most negative ad they see. Not enough voters actually research what candidates have actually stood for. In addition to this far too voters will vote in a way that shows more loyalty to party than to country.

Thus the voter is the ultimate responsibility for failed democracy.

Ultimately responsibility for failed democracy is borne by the citizen voters. To correct this problem people need to again have faith that their vote means something!

The electorate is at fault most directly.
We, the electorate, constantly live down to the low expectations that the politicos set for us.
