We celecrate Columbus Day because at the time the law was made there was a large population of Itlaian population and politicians wanted thier votes.
No, Columbus did not discover America he put in motion the genicide of millions of Indians he also made way for the Trail of Tears and the horrible conditions that Indians now live in.

Be thankful for Columbus!! He went againstthe grain...and did not accept the common idea that the world was flat. Mind you, Columbus did not kill or rape anyone. He discovered an entire continent and proved that the world was round. Popular culture would like to make you think that he was so evil, and peole now take this discovery for granted. By that rationale, why do we have a space program? Why go to othr planets..there might be life there! Then whats the point! ...can you see where that thinking is flawed? Honoring Columbus also helps remind us of a culture that believed in discovery, learning, and growing. A culture and tradition that the west (especially America) has inherited.

Because we live in country that worships it's European heritage while negating it's non-European influences and history. I'm also puzzled by this. Yes, the man deserves credit for traveling around the world, but it was a mistake on his part that he landed on these shores. He deserves credit for proving to the world the world the Earth is round and not flat. Other than that, I don't think he deserves anything else except a pat on the back maybe a medal or something.

People discover things for the first time all the time. I just discovered that my rat is a female even though she has been one the whole time. I don't believe that anyone really "celebrates" this holiday. It's just a day off that our government set forth.

I've been asking this very same question myself ! He and his crew were little more than rapists, murders, and worse. This holiday should be done away with. He did zero for "America". I wish I knew of a way to get it on a national ballot and have this "holiday" be no more. Columbus tried to destroy every culture he came into contact with. I see him as a criminal...

I totally agree with you. Colombus did nothing good for this country, except lead to the decline of a peaceful race who wanted nothing more than not to be disturbed by intruders.
I still say this land is theirs, and it will always rightfully belong to them.

Somebody has to take credit for seeing America. Even though he thought he was in India.
Hey he was smoking too much of the new found "weed" what can I say?

I have no idea, but clearly not everyone agrees with us. There were all kinds of parades and celebrations yesterday.
