As per state law it is imperative that the young man is given notice. Regardless of weather he paid rent or not. The fact of the matter is did you bring the family's name into question or did he bring them into immediate danger. If this was the case they would have had to get an interdict to have him removed. On the other hand if he left on his own occurs then that favors the landlord. If he was a guest then suitable reasons have to be furnished be for he has to leave. In the event that he was threatened then he should open up a case file at the local police station. This will assist him in future and also protect him from unnecessary vindication on the other party's part. Good luck.

Sounds like a family issue and is a sticky situation. If he was paying any bills and has his name on any of them, then that verifies he was resident not trespassing. He could go to an attorney and see if it could get settled out of court. Also if his name is on the lease that would be a proof of residence. As long as he can prove his residence then he has all rights to be on the premises. Check out www.rentlaws.com under your state.

If he was a renter there and had a lease, he was not trespassing and would have to me notified to leave and be given time to pack.

If he was just there as a guest, he must leave when asked or he IS trespassing; but he should still be given time to pack, even in there needs to be an officer present to keep the peace.
